Description
A superstar of a North American native evergreen flowering shrub that deserves a spot in every garden where it will grow (USDA Zones 7a-11), the Desperado Texas Sage is a both beautiful and handsome low-maintenance plant that will grow in the hottest and driest of places in the country or in your garden. It gets its handsomeness from its silvery-grey foliage and its beauty from the pretty purple flowers. What’s really neat is that the flowers bloom at the tips of every stem any time it rains during the warm season, which is year round in frost-free climates. Desperado Texas Sage is ideal as an accent or grouping in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. and is extremely impressive as a colorful hedge.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and wide, the Desperado Texas Sage is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings or in straight or staggered rows to form a very colorful natural hedge. Is very drought tolerant when established so is excellent for the Xeriscape. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, purple theme gardens, rock gardens, wildlife gardens, and pollinator gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4.5 to 5 feet apart for solid hedges; 9 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Texas Sage is very easy to grow in most any well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun for best flowering. It prefers a neutral to alkaline soil ranging from 6.5 to 8.5 on the pH scale and is very drought tolerant when established. Rocky and sandy soils are no problem and neither are pests or diseases. It needs no care or special trimming but removing the tips of the branches in late winter or summer, before or after flowering, will keep it bushier and neater. Rain or irrigation triggers the plant to bloom during the warm seasons so a deep soaking during extended periods of drought is advised to encourage flowering. As with so many other ornamental shrubs this one does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil.

The sage plant was in perfect condition when it arrived. I was delayed getting it in the ground and it wilted a little, but it bounced right back. I’m looking forward to blooms in the summer next year.————————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG 🙂

Wow, I’m so impressed with these 3-gallon Texas sage plants! They are healthy and just as beautiful as shown in the pictures. They have already bloomed once since I got them. I placed the order online for 3 and eagerly waited for them to arrive as I’ve been searching for these plants for a long time. When they were delivered right on time and I saw how perfect they are, I immediately ordered 3 more. I’m going to plant them along a fence line and emailed for advice on planting for my specific plans. I got an immediate response to use perlite instead of rock with my heavy soil during planting, so customer service is on top of customer concerns right away. Sooo happy with my purchase!———————————Wow! Thanks so much for the photo. We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Out of the delivery box, this plant was stunning. A few dried leaves, but a new container, water and fresh air perked it right up. I have only containers in my garden so this one received a very large one. I am excited to see the blooms next year. Love that it is evergreen.——————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
